A feeling or mood that comes from taking genuine pleasure in making ordinary, everyday things more meaningful, beautiful or special.
We have the Scandinavians to thank for many things……Danish pastries, Ikea, Swedish men (*sigh*), but now we’ve got another to add to the list.
You may have come across the Danish word ‘hygge,’ and not had a clue how to pronounce it (we still don’t…..Hoo-gah? Are we saying it right?).
Hygge doesn’t have a direct translation – it’s best explained through examples; sitting by a crackling fire on a cold night, snuggled into a knitted jumper, while drinking mulled wine and listening to the rain on the windows – maybe surrounded by candles. That’s definitely ‘hygge’.
Or eating home-made brownies in the kitchen. Pausing to make the first footprints in snow. Watching TV under a duvet. Gathering with friends for brunch on a Saturday morning – definitely all hygge.
One thing’s for certain. We love it. Here at Coole Swan we have a saying; “we’re not here for a long time, we’re here for a good time.”
So as December arrives at the farm door, take a moment to stop and appreciate the small things and your sense of hygge. To get things kicked off, we can highly recommend a splash of Coole Swan…..
